Summer School Is in Session: A History Lesson with Heels

The Evolution of Drag - Drag Through the Decades Coming to the
Central Park Performing Arts Center, Largo - One Night Only!

Summer school is now in session - time for a history class you'll enjoy. The Evolution of Drag - Drag Through the Decades (EOD) is coming to the Central Park Performing Arts Center in Largo this weekend for one night only. A dazzling blend of performance, history, and pop culture, this drag spectacular celebrates the art of drag and evolution across generations. I had a chance to chat with Daphne Ferraro, the show's creator and star, about what makes The Evolution of Drag a can't-miss event.

For those who may not be familiar, can you tell us what The Evolution of Drag is all about - in a nutshell?

Daphne Ferraro: The Evolution of Drag - Drag Through The Decades is a multimedia drag spectacular, featuring 13 local entertainers from throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond. The show takes the audience on a magical journey through time, through the eyes of a 7' tall drag queen (me). We look at each decade and put a unique drag spin on it.

EOD is an original production that I scripted and created.
It's part pop culture, part history lesson and seamlessly combines live-action scenes and several dazzling drag productions with engaging (and thought-provoking) video elements. The Evolution of Drag has sold out multiple venues throughout Florida and has developed a cult-like following over the last 15 years.

I wanted to dive a little deeper into a show that has entertained so many over the years. When you first conceived The Evolution of Drag: Drag Through the Decades, was there a specific moment in drag or queer history that you knew absolutely had to be included - something that felt personally or culturally essential?

Daphne: EOD has evolved as a show. The first version of the show explored the various types of drag and focused on how drag itself has evolved. The current show (Drag Through the Decades) touches on many important moments in queer history. A couple moments that are highlighted in both versions are the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and another is the Stonewall Riots. These moments demonstrate the true resilience and tenacity of our community and have had a tremendous impact on us since they occurred. We also highlight many other significant achievements.

I had the chance to see the show a few years ago in St. Pete. It was a full house - so if you're like me, you might be wondering: what's new? So I asked…

Daphne: EOD will always evolve. It's just part of the show. We're extremely excited to have a couple of new cast members, and the characters that they are bringing to the show with them. Expect appearances by an iconic 80s diva (who just wanted to dance with somebody), and one brand new character who's currently at the top of the charts. We've also upgraded several costumes, wigs, and updated the script to fit with the times.

You mentioned new cast members. Can you tell us about your cast for this production? Who's bringing the decades to life with you on stage?

Daphne: I'd love to! We have a regular cast who has been doing this show for years, but we're excited to bring on a couple fresh faces as well.

Chi Chi LaLique
, Jocelyn Summers, Kathryn Nevets, Kenya Black, Te Monet, Conundrum, April Fresh, The Lady Janet, Mercy Panic, Autumn Vee, Rick O'Shea, "Just Jarrod" Ketzler, Daphne Ferraro

Closing up the interview, I have one more question. You've been producing this show for over 15 years. Looking back, what have you learned from the experience, and how has it helped you grow as a performer and producer?

Daphne: I've learned that we've truly created something unique and special with this show. The show is 2 hours long, features a giant cast of 13 (who truly are like family) and has people come back multiple times. The show uplifts, inspires and unites.
